How to prepare for your web design project

A project is a collaborative enterprise that has a plan to achieve a particular aim or goal. What about a web design project?

A web design project applies all the aspects of a project. These aspects are collaboration, planning, and a goal. With that, you’ll realize most of the things we set out to achieve in life are projects or mini-projects.

I’ll go through the aspects one by one to make us understand how they are applied to our web design projects to acquire success. If you meet all the requirements, then you’re ready.

Let the journey begin!

Collaboration

Collaboration means you’ll need a team to work with to reach your goal. Here is a list of potential members with you as the general manager:

  • Strategist – they are like a coach whom you trust them to help you articulate your idea/vision and make informed decision about your project.
  • Designer / Developer – they are your captain on the ground who make elements and layouts click and communicates with the strategist on what design is suitable.
  • Graphics Designers – they are like the midfielders who create and make elements come to life. They create that appeal to a brand with their innate ability to be creative while being precise.
  • Digital Marketers – they strike and aim to convert after all the other members have done their part. Should be well conversant with S.E.O and social media marketing at minimum.

Design Plan

Failure to plan is planning to fail. A web design project needs a plan. Here is the list of 8 things you need to put in place before you consider yourself ready to start. I call it the Geneous process of design.

  • Name – a website name is a domain name. It includes an extension (co.ke, .com, etc. ) that is appropriate according to the niche.
  • Tagline – this should be like your value proposition statement in few words and done with a little bit of wordplay and character.
  • Color – colors breathe life to anything. Arm yourself with at least two colors and a third supporting color. For the rest, you can play with shades, tones, and color values. Different colors create different feels. Select your palette wisely.
  • Fonts – they give voice to words. Choose a font according to the character of your brand and consider the lengths of paragraphs too. Readability is key.
  • Logo – A logo acts as a symbol that represents your brand and should have a strong character that is easily recognizable at a glance. It should be dynamic enough to fit onto your website on scroll or static. It should be able to adopt different layouts and screen sizes.
  • Content – These are things that will appear on the website. They include texts, images, and videos. The content will help decide on which platform is suitable for the project.
  • Select a platform – From the content provided, a strategist and designer should be able to decide on which platform ( WordPress, Wix, Drupal etc. ) or language ( Php, Python, JavaScript ) will be suitable for the project.
  • Select hosting type – After deciding on which platform will suit the project, you will be in a better position to select the most suitable type of hosting, whether it’s shared, cloud, or WordPress hosting.

Aim/ Goal

In a web design project, the goal is usually to come up with an end product that is useful, usable, and valuable to both the website users and the owner.

To help determine the goal apart from hearing it from the stakeholders themselves, you can ask some of these few questions to broaden the understanding of the scope.

  • Why are you doing the project? – this will enable you to understand the business model of the intender.
  • Who will use the website? – this will help understand the audience and the stakeholder.
  • What value will it provide? – you should consider both the users and the owner.
  • How will success be measured? – Is it through traffic, sales, subscription etc.
  • What can we realistically achieve using the available resources. ( Cost, Time and Manpower)

With all that, success!
